SouthEast Linux Fest 2024

A Layman's Guide to Cryptography
06-08, 14:00–14:50 (EST5EDT), Rocky Linux (BallroomB)

Cryptography keeps Alice and Bob’s conversations private from nosy Eve but also much more. In this talk you will learn about the history, fundamental principles, and uses of cryptography.

The best way to keep a secret is to make sure nobody understands what you’re saying. Cryptography helps you to securely communicate even when crooks or your enemies are listening. This talk will go over what exactly cryptography is and a short history lesson in how FLOSS brought secure crypto to the masses. You’ll learn the most common schemes and their uses, some footguns, and other fun bits about crypto.
